Quantifying the Cost of Workplace App Overload

The engagement

As workplace communication applications multiplied, RingCentral wanted to understand whether those tools were making work easier or creating a new source of friction. The challenge was to move beyond general frustration and quantify how navigating among applications affected employees and productivity.

The research approach

The survey reached knowledge workers in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia. It explored phone, messaging, video, web-meeting and other workplace communications tools, along with employees’ attitudes toward application overload, unified communications and artificial intelligence.

From findings to impact

The research found that 69% of workers lost up to an hour each day navigating among communications applications—equivalent to as much as 32 working days annually. Workers used four communications applications on average, while 20% used six or more. RingCentral used the research in its report, press materials, blog content and product narratives.

Highlighted result

2,000 knowledge workers surveyed—and a finding that gave workplace app overload a measurable cost.

Methodology

CITE Research conducted an online survey on behalf of RingCentral among 2,000 knowledge workers in the United States, United Kingdom and Australia.
